GOAL 1: DEVELOPING AN URBAN VILLAGE WITH SAFE, AFFORDABLE, WALKABLE, AND RESPECTFUL OF CULTURE

Fostering a healthy habitat

Ivy City has attempted to incorporate existing structures with capital development plans.  This includes the Hecht Warehouse (now apartment buildings) and the Crummell School, which DC government has retained ownership of during redevelopment.   However, from 2011-2015 base rents have jumped more than 20%, which increases the risk of pushing people out.  Could apartment developers increase the number of affordable dwelling units, beyond the number legally required as part of fostering a healthy habitat?
